STEEL SHEET
The magnitude of tension pulling sheet metal to the point of a hammer strike is conducive to multiple factors. Some that play a significant effect are impact force, hammerhead shape, and the surface underneath. Though tolerances of control may fluctuate among technique and craftsperson, hand-forming metal always results in some degree of unpredictable distortions.
Steel Emphasis was an opportunity to play with the limits of alteration. I would dish out concavities until the steel stretched nearly to a leaf and imminently tore through. I then worked the apex of each a step further with a MIG welder. I melted steel bordering a crack until I “caught an edge” of appropriate thickness to bear the heat. Only then could these voids be filled with crystal-like masses of fresh weld.
